More Chevron Scraps

As I was cleaning up all the scraps of chevron fabrics from the tree table runner, I became distracted by a few bits and ended up making another little table topper.

The strips were already all cut, it was just a matter of sewing them up with some white Kona fabric.

This quick little project was another excuse to use up more of the chevron fabrics on the backing.

I am happy to say all of the scraps are now safely put away so this should be it for those chevrons.  I really need to get focused on finshing some other projects!

Happy Friday Everyone!!

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2015 ROYGBIV Circles

My second quilt entry into the Fall 2015 Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side is one of my favorite Scrap-A-Palooza quilts.

For those of you new to my blog, the Scrap-A-Palooza series is an ongoing event where I share the details of a scrap quilt I am making.  All of the quilts are sewn from scraps and are usually really quick and easy.  I try and share the main assembly steps along with my thinking behind the choices I make.  Sometimes, other quilters join me and I share the quilts they create too.

This fun, scrappy circle quilt is my entry into the ROYGBIV Quilt category.
(You can read the original post here.)

It was made entirely from my scrap bin.  Bits of fabric were grouped by color then sewn into offset log cabin blocks.  While I shared a few other possible layouts, I settled on these fun dots of color.

I really enjoyed using low volume scraps for the background on this quilt.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.

A subtle print for the backing and a golden binding finished it ff nicely.

I played around with swirls and feathers for the quilting.  I did all the quilting in a simple white thread.

Using my scraps and playing with color is something I do quite often.
Who doesn't love a Rainbow!

A big thanks to Amy for hosting this event.

I hope you are able to take some time to visit all the bloggers who have entered the show.  Then you can nominate your favorites for Viewer's Choice before the 29th..  Voting for all the categories opens on the 30th.  It is a great opportunity to discover new, inspiring quilters.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2015 Scrappy Pineapple

Every spring and fall, Amy Ellis of Amy's Creative Side holds one of my favorite events - the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  This event coincides with Quilt Market and is a way for those of us who didn't get a chance to go, to enjoy a virtual quilt show.  I am always so inspired by all the beautiful quilts and their creative makers. It is a great time to discover new blogs and quilters.

One of the quilts I am entering this fall is my Scrappy Pineapple Quilt.
(You can read the original post here.)

An intricate Pineapple quilt has been on my bucket list since I started quilting. I had started piecing these blocks many years ago and finally finished this quilt late spring.  I was heavily inspired by some of my Pendleton blankets that I love so much.

I wanted this quilt to also test my skill as a piecer.  Each block was meticulously pieced - I wanted to see precision without paper piecing the blocks.

I chose scraps in reds, blacks, greens and tans.  I wanted this quilt to have a lot of warmth to the colors.

When it came to laying out the blocks, I wanted to come up with something unique.  For weeks, the blocks were moved around my design wall until I had a layout I liked.  Then it was just a matter of a lot of math and background cutting.

And I was so pleased with the results!
I love to see traditional quilt blocks laid out in fun and new ways.

For the quilting, I went with stacked swirls in the background and ditch work in the blocks.  I also echo quilted in the black sashing to accentuate the layout design.

A red and tan print on the back to finish it off nicely.

I am entering this quilt in the scrappy quilts category. I love all the tiny pieces and the way the colors all work together to create some beautiful patterns and illusions.

Thanks to Amy for hosting this event.  It must be an immense amount of work!

I hope you grab a cuppa and take some time to visit all the bloggers who have entered the show.  Then you can nominate your favorites for Viewer's Choice before the 29th..  Voting for all the categories opens on the 30th.

Oh Scrap! : Fun with Scraps

Do you ever obsess about a block you have seen?  I know I said I was going to try and just focus on finishes for the rest of the year but KnitNKwilt shared this block earlier this month on Oh Scrap! and I have thought about it ever since.

purple and orange

Last week I received some new dies for my AccuQuilt Studio fabric cutter and I just had to try them out.  The one I was most excited about was the 4.5" multiple square.

I quickly pulled some pinks, oranges, plums and dark red scraps and got to cutting.  Within  minutes I had a big stack of luscious squares.

 .
I already had a number of smaller blue squares I had previously cut using my 2.5" multiple die.  These I started sewing into little 4 patches.

Here is my test block and I admit, I am in love!  When more blocks get sewn and they are laid out together, I think it is going to be gorgeous and rich in color.

My Accuquilt cutter was an expensive purchase but now when I think of all the time I used to spend each evening cutting scraps into little squares and then waking up in the morning with stiff hands, it is worth every penny.  Not to mention, my squares are really accurate now!

I also bought a 3.5" square die.  I have future plans for that one too so stay tuned!
