Crafted Applique New Possibilities Blog Hop

Finally!  It is my day to share with you Lara Buccella's new book "Crafted Applique....New Possibilities."

Have you seen all the wonderful projects being made with this game-changing new applique technique?  If you haven't,  I have a calendar at the end of the post so you can go visit others.

But first, check out what I made....

I received the book about a month ago.  The book does a great job explaining the crafted technique and has instructions for some wonderful projects.  But upon reading it, I was immediately drawn to try out the process with a project of my own.  I have never found raw edge applique works well with the projects I always want to attempt with it.  My fabric tears, the edges are frayed and the projects usually gets trashed before it is completed.  Let me just say, the crafted technique is a game changer!

After a quick trip to the store for a few supplies, in an afternoon I made this fun pillow for a friend who loves Jack in the Pulpits as much as I do.  I have had a remnant of Jane Sassaman's fabric in my stash for years just waiting for the perfect project.  Using Lara's technique, I was able to simply cut this glorious flower out of the fabric (as one piece) and apply it to an already quilted backing. How simple it that!

The detail I was able to get was amazing.  The fabric didn't tear no matter how close I had to cut.  And because the fabric doesn't fray, I had no issues with the topstitching.  My mind is now swimming with ideas - flower details on fabric buckets, patches on jeans and jackets, and 3 dimensional items as trims on all sorts of projects.  This pillow will definitely not be the last item you see from me using this technique!

Lara has graciously offered me a copy of the book to give away to one of you.  To be entered, just leave me a comment.  I would love to hear what you would add an applique detail to.  I will choose a random winner as I enjoy a cup of coffee on the morning of June 1st.

Please make sure you’re not a no-reply commenter (or leave an email address in your comment if you’re not sure). You cannot win if I cannot get a hold of you!

**************This Giveaway is Closed********************

Congratulations to Jenny!

You can also visit Lara's blog - there she has more projects to share from the book and even more giveaways.  This red and white wallhanging is one of my favorite projects in the book.

A huge thank you to Lara for including me in this hop and sharing with me her technique.  If you haven't "met" her yet, she is a sweetheart and so very supportive to all who come in contact with her.  I wish her so much success with this book!

What a lovely flower appliqué!

I want to add some appliqués to placemats and small table runners.

Anita said...

I would love to add appliqué to a bag/tote. I have exactly the right fabric with lots of butterflies that could swarm the bag.
Lara's method looks very interesting, and I would love to try it out!

Nancy J said...

Your Jack in the pulpit is stunning. I have a friend who lives about 5 hours north of us, and she has them in her garden. Applique, I think a round fabric basket for bits and pieces .. of fabric naturally... and I would like to do the applique with printed photos of our family..then I would have them right by my side as I sewed. The amazing and so different designs from Lara's book and other quilters with their own designs and patterns using her technique have been wonderful to see , and this is a very generous give-away.

Karen M said...

I have never been satisfied with my applique. I can't wait to learn this new technique. Thanks for the chance to win.

Love the detail on your cushion. This technique is now on my to do list. Take care, Mary.

I so enjoy your blog. You create such lovely projects, and this cushion is no exception. I don't appliqued well, so maybe this book would be a game-changer.

I love your flower applique. I want to applique an intricate medallion circle and then free motion quilt the same design on either side for a nifty table runner.

Carol- Beads and Birds said...

I have never appliqued and I want this book a lot. If I can't win it, I am budgeting to buy it. The technique looks so easy. Your applique is so pretty and graceful. It's beautiful and a perfect tribute to what can be accomplished with this technique.

This sounds intriguing....might be just the thing for a Christmas applique that I have in the queue.

Your pillow is simply gorgeous Cyndy! I've been so looking forward to seeing it on QMFTH! Jack-in-the-Pulpits are so elegant and sculptural and this one makes a stunning applique! Your friend is going to Love her pillow! I didn't realize that you quilted the background and then sewed on the applique. That's something I've wanted to try too.

Thank you for all the terrific things you wrote! I love that you call the Crafted Applique method a game changer! I think that too and it's so exciting to see how you've used it and to hear how so many great ideas are just bubbling out of you! I'm also looking forward to reading the comments in answer to your giveaway question.

That looks great! I have some pillows planned for the daybed in my baby's nursery that need a little something appliqued on.

I'm making new throw pillows for my living room sofa...and after seeing your beautiful Jack-in-the-Pulpit project...that's what I think will inspire me. I have some luscious tulip fabric that I've held on to for several years not knowing what exactly I'd use it for. It will be PERFECT if only I knew Lara's "secret" technique! Thanks for a chance to win. I really enjoy your blog and follow via email.

I have a wallhanging in mind to do, but haven't wanted to do raw edge with blanket stitch on it. This technique sounds great.

I would like to add some applique pieces to some tote bags.

Chantal said...

WOW! With only one piece of fabric? AMAZING!! You have created a mini masterpiece here. How did you do the pink in the bottom leaves? Is it threaded or was the fabric like that? So impressed. If I were to win I would fix a blouse of mine that I love so much but can't wear because of a stain that won't come out. I would add some flowers to make the horror disappear and then, I would decorate tote bags, labels, pillows, purses, ... you get it, right? lol. Thanks for the chance. ;^)

What a perfect project to test out Lara's technique! Those twists and curves are amazing and such a lovely gift for your friend! I want to add an appliqued name to a lap quilt for my husband's aunt who lives in a nursing home. It'd be so nice to have no fraying, no blasted satin or blanket stitching to get my horns emerging! Enjoy that cuppa!

Theglasdiva said...

This style of applique is much more refined than using a lot of zig zag stitching. Well done. Isn't it nice when one of your treasured fabrics finds a home! Hope I win this lovely book.
